  Prairie Grass Elegy

Here the bison have made a road
and the purple coneflowers,
wet with their measure of dew,
root as deep as they will.

And the purple coneflowers
invite two regal lovers to bed,
root as deep as they will,
until the earth is turned by hand.

Invite two regal lovers to bed
so they might spread bright seed
until the earth is turned by hand
as the pigweed and corn arrive.

So they might spread bright seed,
the settler brings them inside
as the pigweed and corn arrive
where the blaze of color would thrive.

The settler brings them inside
wet with their measure of dew
where the blaze of color would thrive.
Hear: the bison have made a road.
