Prairie Poetry
  Midsummer In Kansas

Cattle clump in a billboard shadow
Fields swelter and ranch hands sweat
Insects drowse in the heat, and
dogs pant for shelter.

Children shrill at the pool
Bronzed bathers gasp as
cool water hits seared flesh

F-4's thunder over Cessna Stadium,
and fireworks blossom, then wilt,
in Fourth of July sky-gardens.
