Prairie Poetry
  Driving Home

The light is long with August
somewhere between Winnipeg
and Regina on the flat
dry prairie that unfolds under me.

Nothing but bales of hay waiting
on each side of this highway
the low grumble of trucks
as I pass them one after another.

I stop at Crusty's for lunch
in Moosomin on my way through
find my way back to September
and the fall of leaves in Calgary.
