Winter is Coming

I dreamt it snowed last night.
Tire tracks cut through the
powder.
It was dark
and it was lovely.

Winter is coming

I've been looking at gloves
in the stores.
In my dream,
I searched the pockets
of last year's coats
before the school bus came.

Winter is coming.

I cringed at the bags of ice-melt
Stacked by the door
Later, they were only propping the door open
to let in the breeze.

I need a coat in the morning,
but by afternoon,
I see jackets in mounds on the asphalt
of the playground.
The garden is bare, but the zinnias
are still blooming, yellow in the afternoon,
and the squirrels have land mined the yard
with holes
for burying, because winter
is coming.
